Texas Sheet Cake

  • 2 sticks butter

  • 4 Tablespoons cocoa

  • 1 cup water

  • 2 cups sugar

  • 2 cups flour

  • 2 eggs slightly beaten

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

  • 1/2 cup sour cream

  • 1 teaspoon baking soda

  • Frosting
  • 1/2 stick butter

  • 2 Tablespoons cocoa

  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla

  • 3 Tablespoons milk

  • 1 3/4 cup confectioners sugar

  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts (optional)


  • Boil butter, cocoa and water . Remove from heat and add sugar, flour, eggs, salt, sour cream and baking soda. Place in a greased and floured 12″ x 18″ pan and bake at 375* for 20 minutes. Remove from oven and frost immediately.
  • For the frosting, combine milk, cocoa and butter in a saucepan and bring mixture to a boil. Stir in powdered sugar and beat the mixture with a hand-held mixer to get rid of any lumps. Stir in walnuts. Pour the hot mixture right over the hot cake.  Use a spatula to spread evenly over the cake. Allow frosting to set for about 10 minutes before eating.
